Seniors Take Their Last Strut

The Brighton High School Seniors got the chance to strut their stuff at the BHS Fashion Show. It was also an opportunity for local businesses to advertise for Prom 2012.

The Second Annual Brighton High School Fashion Show was held April 18 at 7 p.m. in the Brighton Center of Performing Arts. This event was organized by the Junior Class Council, which is advised by teachers Stephanie Carroll and Jennifer Kenger.

Before the show each attendee received a raffle ticket that gave them a chance to win one of the several prizes donated by local vendors. The Prom Fashion Show was an event the Junior Class Council members planned in order to sell discounted tickets for the 2012 Prom dance, promote local Brighton businesses, and to show the student body this year’s fashion trends in Prom attire.

This year’s show gave the featured 20 chosen girls and boys a chance to ‘strut their stuff down the runway’. Each senior walked first individually down the runway, then was accompanied by their partner.

The boys were featured in Brighton Tux Shop tuxedos, the girls wore their own dresses, but had their hair and make-up done by Gina Agosta Salon. Country Lane Flowers, also kindly donated the corsage and boutonnières worn by each model.

“I think the fashion show went really well and all the seniors really enjoyed themselves,” senior fashion model Zach Plahn.

The show had a live DJ, DJ Joe from Mobile Rhythms playing music throughout. Carroll and Kenger hosted the event in an energetic manner and gave a description of each senior's Prom attire along with a small biography.

Throughout the show, Carroll and Kenger also drew raffle tickets for several prizes donated by vendors. The prizes varied from gift certificates to Brighton restaurants, cash, a free tux rental from Brighton Tux Shop, a free video of the Prom dance from Bowman Media, five pairs of prom tickets, and two beauty baskets from Gina Agosta Salon. Saganos, Still Water Grill, Milford House, TW & Friends, Stonefire, and Piis all donated dinner vouchers.

Junior Class Council Representative Kara Weingartz helped Carroll and Kenger read off raffle tickets and hand out prizes to winners of raffle. Also, at the event Prom tickets were sold for $30; $10 off their orginal price.

“I was really surprised I won two free prom tickets. I didn't think I'd win but I am very very for Prom now that I have one less thing to fund,” junior prize winner Audrey Smail.

Not only did seniors walk down the runway, but also some BHS staff members did. Teachers Mona Sokoloff, Arnella Park, Nate Grabowski, Scott Matousek, and administrators Jack Yates, John Thompson, Gavin Johnson, and Dr. Greg Gray participated as models. Sokoloff and Park wore dresses kindly donated by The White Dress and the male staff also wore Brighton Tux Shop tuxedos.

“I was thrilled to walk with Nate but I couldn’t see very well due to the spotlights. But at the end we reeled in some fish. He caught a trout and I caught a pike,” staff model Scott Matousek said.

Country Lane Flowers, Gina Agosta Salon, and Brighton Tux Shop also offered more deals for Prom. Country Lane has agreed to give $20 off all Prom corsages, $10 off boutonnières, and will donate $1 to the 2012 Senior All Night Party for each Prom corsage sold. Gina Agosta Salons agreed to $5 off one service, $10 off two services, or $15 dollars off all three services; services being nails, hair, and make-up. Also, Brighton Tux Shop has agreed to give $45 off any tux rentals worn at the fashion show.

“The Fashion Show went really well! Overall, the event was success. We doubled the attendance from last year, filled all of the house seats, and added three vendors,” Carroll said.

The Prom Fashion Show sold over 200 tickets, making the Junior Class council start off with a good profit for the dance. The 2012 Prom dance will be held on May 19 at Crystal Gardens from 8 p.m. to Midnight, and is themed Greecian.

“Everyone should come out to the dance because it’s going to be Greecian spectacular, with have awesome people working, and the best music. It’ll be a fun time, you’ll love it,” Junior Class Council Treasurer Tess Bradley said.
