Softball and baseball use spring break as spring training

The BHS varsity baseball and softball teams traveled south for spring break, in hope of getting outside and ready for the brand new season. Both teams headed for Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

For the first time in thirty years, the BHS varsity baseball team traveled south for spring break, in hope of getting outside and ready for the brand new season. The varsity softball team traveled down south as well. Both teams headed for Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. The weather was great and offered the Bulldogs a perfect opportunity to hone in on some skills they needed to touch up on before the season got under way. Because of MHSAA rules, the teams couldn’t play but could as practice as much as they wanted. The Baseball team stayed about twenty minutes south of Myrtle Beach in Myrtles Inlet. The Softball team however was in downtown Myrtle Beach, right on the beach. The teams stayed in hotel rooms with different teammates, this was great to build team chemistry.

“The hotel was a great opportunity for me to always be with my teammates and we had a lot of fun just messing around all the time”, senior Austin Smith said.

The trip itinerary would be different for the two teams. Baseball had two practices a day, from Friday to Tuesday. Baseball would also scrimmage against themselves during this time period. Softball how ever had one practice a day from Saturday to Wednesday. No matter how many practices you have down there, both teams will have a leg up on the competition when the season starts.

“ The whole trip made our team better and will help us win some more games this year, because we were able to get outside in Myrtle Beach and work on the little things that we needed to”, junior Sam Krause said.

After the baseball/softball segment ended on spring break, some players decided to stay in Myrtle Beach and others piled in their cars for the long fifteen hour car ride home to the mitten. The players that stayed enjoyed great weather and fun activities. Some players played putt putt, went to the beach and relaxed on the final days of their spring breaks. Every player on the Varsity Baseball team had to be home Sunday at six for a practice. The Break was a huge success for both programs. This will give the Bulldogs a leg up on the competition and will most likely become a tradition for the programs in the future.

“I am glad to be a part of the first group to go on a spring trip as a team. I hope this tradition can continue and next year I find myself playing baseball somewhere warm for spring break”, junior Jake Steslicki
