Peace Walkers Share Message with Brighton

Walkers share vision of peace as they march to Lansing to petition elected officials for peace commission.

Members of the advocacy group Moveable Peace made their way through Brighton, on foot, during a to petition elected officials for the creation of a statewide Commission for Peace and Justice.

“The petition is part of a movement of peace," said Peace Walk Chairperson Kim Redigan.

Moveable Peace is a Michigan-based group founded in 2010 that promotes peace through community events

The peace walkers convened at the in Brighton where musician and historian Neil Woodward known as Michigan’s Troubadour served as guest speaker. Redigan said the group offered a variety of events to the Brighton community including a leather book that people could record their thoughts and prayers.

While visiting Brighton, the group was sponsored by Community Unitarian Universalists in Brighton, Pax Christi and .

The group spent the night at St. Paul’s in Brighton after their journey.

Each group will also carry a Moveable Art Space which includes short films and writing materials to share with people they meet along the way.  

Peace Walk groups will hold nightly events in various communities, like the one held at St. Paul’s in Brighton. Tomorrow night, the group will host an event at Saint Paul’s Episcopal Church in Howell.

Pinckney resident Yusif Barakat, a member of the group that walked through Brighton, said he is part of the Peace Walk because he has dedicated his life to promoting peace.

During the journey, the groups vow to an attitude of nonviolence, openness and respect toward each person they encounter. “We have been so blessed during our journey,” said Redigan. “We have had people bless us along the way and it has been very positive.”
