Ask A Trooper

Vigilance and Responsibly Keys to Motorcylce Safety

Sgt. Mark Thompson of the Michigan State Police discusses motorcycle safety and the heroes of Boston.

Don’t like the weather? Wait it will change. Speaking of weather, on those few warm days and some not so warm days one of the early signs of spring has made its presence known. I’m talking about motorcycles. I’m going to ask everyone to remember to be vigilant and look more than once for motorcycles. A few seconds of safe driving techniques could save everyone from years of heartache and pain. That being said, motorcycle operators and their passengers also have a responsibility for the safe operation of a motorcycle.  Drivers have you done your equipment safety check?  Is everything working? Have you re-acclimated to your motorcycle’s equipment, switches, grips, brakes and shifting?  Myself, I take a couple of days to re-acclimate myself …

Nicole Krawcke Says Goodbye to Brighton Patch

Brighton editor to cover Plymouth-Canton area.

Change is never never easy - after serving as Brighton Patch editor for 1 1/2 years, I'm moving on to cover news and events for Plymouth-Canton Patch. My new role begins Monday. No, this is not an April Fool's joke. I'm really sad to say goodbye to this wonderful community that I've immersed myself in uncovering the faces, places and the stories that makes this community special. I'm no stranger to the Plymouth-Canton community, I was covering stories there long before I ever came to Brighton. However, returning will be bittersweet.  Somewhere in between covering the arrival of twisted World Trade Center piece for the 9/11 Memorial at Fire Station 31 and the 8-year-old who lobbied state lawmakers after seeing a documentary about the …

Letter to the Editor: Brighton Enrichment Program in Danger of Being Cut

Brighton Community Education Director and Enrichment Supervisor ask for the community's help to keep programming in the district.

Dear Enrichment Instructors, Friends and Participants, The Brighton Area School Board stated at their Board Meeting, February 25th, that they would like to move the Enrichment classes out of the school district and over to the SELCRA group. We have no idea how SELCRA will structure this service, but we know that the current Enrichment classes would be closed and staff and instructors would be let go. Prior Boards have chosen not to do that move, as it is not financially beneficial. This board seems to not want to look at the financial impacts and in turn want to simply provide SELCRA what they want. This brings me to my request. I would like to help the current board members to better understand the Enrichment programs and the benefits it …

5 Things to Do with Children After a Snowfall

There's always the standard snowmen and snow angels. But you also can turn the snow into artwork with some food dye or bring it inside for some not-so-cold fun.

After a snow storm like Thursday night's, here are five things that can occupy little minds for hours. Or at least for however long the sun stays away.

Talk About Town: What's Your Driving Pet Peeve?

What is one thing that other drivers do, or don't do, that really irks you?

With the recent bout of bad weather, the complaints about drivers have been rolling in. Whether it's driving through a dense fog without your headlights, talking on the phone while driving or driving too fast/slow for road conditions, Patch wants to know. On the Brighton Patch Facebook page, readers were already sounding off about drivers who don't use headlights when driving through fog. MaryBeth Potrykus wrote, "Do some drivers believe blinkers are optional in their vehicle? Also, since it's been so foggy, drivers must have their headlights on. It is important for other drivers to see you." Sharon Wolff commented, "Not knowing how to drive in a roundabout. Not that hard people." So, tell us: What is the one thing other drivers do that …
