The filling of three administrative staffing positions at Brighton Area Schools for the 2013-2014 school year were announced in Superintendent Greg Gray’s Friday letter to the community. On April 29, the Board of Education met to discuss the approval of the three staff reductions which were in accordance with the district's deficit elimination plan Replacing current Hornung Elementary principal, Susan Johnson, will be Jack Yates. According to Gray’s letter, Yates, the current grade 11 principal at Brighton High School, has been with Brighton Area Schools since he was 19-years-old and has extensive elementary principal experience. House Bills 4465-4466 were approved in Lansing on Tuesday and await a full House vote.
Two house bills that would eliminate the foreign language requirement for high school students were approved in Lansing on Tuesday in the House Education Committee. Currently, students must take a foreign language in grades 9-12 to graduate and in Brighton Area Schools, the addition of Zero Hour was implemented to help fulfill the requirement. "The purpose is to give students the chance to make up a lost credit, get a required class out of the way, or take a required class to allow more flexibility in the regular six hour schedule," according to a previous post regarding Zero Hour. Co-sponsored by State Reps. Cindy Denby, R-Handy Township, and Bill Rogers, R-Genoa Township, House Bills 4465-4466 would also modify required credits in …

Oakland Schools will honor a Novi educator and Brighton resident Thursday during the 26th annual Outstanding Teacher of the Year Awards in Waterford. Novi High School teacher Katy Dinkelmann is among 58 nominees from 22 local school districts who will be recognized during National Teacher Appreciation Week for their contributions in the classroom. Outstanding Teacher of the Year Awards are given each year to teachers at the elementary, middle and high school levels who excel in the following areas. The Brighton Area Schools will have openings to Schools of Choice Program for the 2013/2014 school year. There are unlimited openings in Kindergarten and grades 1, 2, 3, 4, 7, 8, and 9 - 12. There are limited grade 5 (1 seat) and grade 6 (1 seat) openings. Schools of Choice applications can be obtained at Central Office at BECC, 125 South Church Street (M-F 8am 4:30pm). Applications are also available on the districts's web site www.brightonk12.com. Questions about the program may be directed to the superintendent's office at (810) 299-4040. Support and thanks for Brighton Area School's Superintendent Greg Gray's decision to remain in Brighton was represented with signs and balloons on Friday. The news came on Monday, a week after Gray announced he was a finalist for the superintendent position for the Portage Public School District. On Friday, community members had tied balloons to a light pole outside the Brighton Schools administration building and a large sign reading "Hooray for Dr. Gray, Thanks for Staying" stood outside the parking lot entrance. Support for Gray's decision to remain in Brighton was also seen on the Brighton Patch Facebook page on Monday night after news spread of his decision to not leave the district.
