Hornung Students Jump Rope, Shoot Hoops for Heart Health

Brighton students raise money, promote physical fitness for the American Heart Association.

February is National Heart Health Month and Hornung Elementary students have spent the last week raising money and promoting awareness for the American Heart Association. Students have been busy soliciting pledges from family and friends to jump rope and shoot hoops in their gym classes. As of Thursday night, the school has raised about $3,000 according to Physical Education Teacher Tamara Rollins. Rollins started the program when she first came to the school in 1996. "It fits right into PE," she said. "And whether they want to donate money or not, everybody participates. Friday, Feb. 1, is the American Heart Association’s National Wear Red Day.

Are you wearing red today? Whether it’s a fashion choice or a statement of your support for heart health, we want to see you show it off. Friday, Feb. 1, is the 10th anniversary of National Wear Red Day. The annual event, spearheaded by the American Heart Association’s Go Red For Women movement, shines a spotlight on heart disease.
