Brighton Area Firefighters promote the department's smoke alarm campaign with the popular dance video.
A group of Brighton Area Firefighters have joined in an internet sensation and filmed their own Harlem Shake - Firefighter Style. The Harlem Shake as an Internet meme began earlier this month, when five teens from Australia uploaded a 30-second video to YouTube and then watched it go viral. Since then, thousands of groups of dancers have created spin offs. Students at Hartland High School did one for their morning announcement. Brighton Fire Chief Mike O'Brian said the video was made by off-duty staff members at Fire Station 31 in downtown Brighton. "They did it first as a joke," O'Brian said. "Then they thought it would be a good idea if we added a little fire prevention twist to it. So we're hoping people watch it and hope that people …

The Brighton Area Fire Authority (BAFA) is getting an influx of new blood with its recent hire of 22 new paid-on call firefighters since September. Of those new firefighters, 16 began the Fire Academy this week. BAFA currently has 91 paid on-call firefighters, but is basically always hiring, according to Brighton Area Fire Chief Mike O'Brian. The department lost 27 firefighters in 2011 due to various factors like job relocation, time commitments and more, then another 11 in 2012. O'Brian said the department will probably be in a state where they need to hire 20 to 25 new firefighters every year. Each firefighter is required to complete the State of Michigan Fire Fighter I and II training as well as complete Medical First Responder (MFR) …
