Brighton resident Shanda Willis announced her candidacy for a seat on the Brighton City Council.
Shanda Willis has officially filed to run for a seat on the Brighton City Council. As the result of her experience running for State House, Willis, through engaging the citizens of Brighton, learned of citizens’ concerns literally at their doorsteps. Joining the Brighton Chamber of Commerce has raised her awareness of the local business communities need for responsive and transparent government. Claudia Roblee, 6-year Brighton city council member announced that she will not run for reelection. Roblee was appointed to fill the seat of Cathy Jones in February of 2007. She then ran and won the seat in November of 2007 and again in 2011. When asked why she is not running again Roblee answered, “I have many new opportunities in my personal life that I want to develop and need the time to be able to do so.I have learned a tremendous amount from my time of service and am grateful that I was able to have the opportunity to work for the taxpayers of Brighton. Council members discussed eliminating the Downtown Development Authority director and the DDA clerk during Thursday's City Council meeting.
During Thursday’s Brighton City Council meeting, council members discussed the possibility of eliminating two positions connected with the Downtown Development Authority. Councilman Jim Bohn requested that the city eliminate the Downtown Development Authority director and the DDA clerk instead of not filling two Department of Public Services positions, according to a report from the Press & Argus. Council members discussed drafting an ordinance that will regulate consumer fireworks usage within the City.
Brighton City Council members made a recommendation to the city attorney to draft a new ordinance that would limit the ignition of fireworks to the day before, day of and day after a federal holiday for a future first reading. The previous ordinance completely prohibited the use of fireworks within the city due to a fatality involving a fireworks display in the 1980s, according to Fire Chief Mike O'Brian. However, it became obsolete last year when state legislators authorized the sale of airborne fireworks to generate sales tax revenue and vendor registration fees. Cities and townships cannot block the usage of fireworks, but do have limited power to restrict where and when people can light them off. The law bars municipalities from …

Brighton High School Freshman Jack Wisbiski recently earned the rank of Eagle Scout.
Brighton City Council honored yet another newly minted Eagle Scout from Troop 350 during its meeting last week. 14-year-old Jack Wisbiski, a freshman at Brighton High School, was acknowledged by City Council members for earning the highest rank in Boy Scouts. To earn an Eagle Scout rank, a boy scout must earn 21 merit badges, serve six months in a troop leadership position and plan and develop a community service project. For Wisbiski's Eagle Project, he built a boardwalk on the Penosha Hiking Trail in the Brighton Recreation Area. "Every year in the spring, the trail would flood and turn into a swamp," he said. City Council members approved the purchase of the sculpture "Spiral" during its meeting last week.
The City of Brighton has added the 16th piece of art to its permanent collection during the City Council meeting last week. The sculpture “Spiral” by West Bloomfield artist Maureen Voorheis and fabricator Jim Ignash from Howell, was purchased with private donations. The piece was originally installed for a two-year display in the Brighton Outdoor Sculpture exhibit in July 2009 on W. Grand River, in front of Tim Horton’s. The Brighton Arts and Culture Commission (BACC) identified “Spiral” as one of the sculptures they wanted to purchase for permanent display. Council approved a site plan amendment requested by the Brighton Area Fire Department requiring Brookside Mall on West Grand River to install a gate with a Knox lock, to which the department would have a master key, allowing quick access to the adjacent Taco Bell property in the event of an emergency. Fire Chief Michael O'Brian said in a letter that his department and other emergency responders require a secondary access point besides the Taco Bell driveway on Grand River, according to the rules established by the International Fire Code. The mall's owners had wanted the driveway access from Taco Bell closed, saying that customers of the fast food restaurant sometimes drop trash in their driveway and the Taco Bell food delivery trucks …
