The Township Board will hold a special meeting to approve the manager contract after it is finalized.
The Brighton Township Board of Trustees has decided on a new manager. Brian Vick was one of five candidates interviewed for the position last month and was at the top of every board member's list, according to Township Supervisor Tom Murphy. "He brings with him a lot of energy and experience," Murphy said of Vick. "He's run both townships and villages, which are similar in nature, and he's got city background in Grosse Pointe as well as with the Village of Grosse Point Shores. He just brings a lot of different views and different levels to the township." The board is waiting to finalize the contract, then it will hold a special meeting to approve Vick's hiring. Brighton and Brighton Township Clerks are predicting high voter turnout on Nov. 6.
The Presidential General Election is less than a month away and both the City of Brighton and Brighton Township clerks are predicting high voter turnout on Nov. 6. During the 2008 Presidential Election, The City of Brighton saw 74.16% voter turnout, 1,425 of those were absentee voters. City Clerk Diana Lowe said she predicts a similar turnout this year. Brighton Township Clerk Ann Bollin said the township typically sees a great turnout for presidential general elections and also an increase in absentee voters. Bollin said it's hard to compare voter turnout percentages for general elections because the township's number of registered voters has steadily increased from 2008 to 2012. The deadline to register to vote in the Nov. 6 General Election is just around the corner. Local residents have until Oct. 9 to register at Brighton City Hall, Brighton Township Hall, any Secretary of State office or by mail. In order to vote, you must: Those who aren't able to go to the polls on election day may cast an absentee ballot. October and November are the most dangerous months for deer crashes, according to the Michigan Deer Crash Coalition.
Livingston County had a reported 719 deer-related car crashes in 2011 - a 151 drop from 2010, according to the Michigan Deer Crash Coalition (MDCC). Of those 719 crashes, 81 of them happened in Brighton Township -- earning the 9th ranking in the top ten southeast Michigan communities for deer crashes last year. Hartland Township had the second highest deer crashes in Livingston County in 2011, dropping out of the top ten southeast Michigan list. The Southeast Michigan Council of Governments (SEMCOG) is a member of the MDCC, which works to decrease vehicle-deer crashes. The Clerk's office received between 50 to 55 applications for the township manager position.
The Brighton Township Board of Trustees are on-track to hire a new township manager by this time next month. Previous Township Manager Dan Bishop resigned in June in order to begin employment with the City of Albion. The deadline for applications for the position was Sept. 8. The township received between 50-55 applications for the position, according to Clerk Ann Bollin. A few of the candidates have requested to remain anonymous at this point in the process so names are not being released, Bollin said. Board members will identify their top ten candidates to the Clerk's office, who will then proceed with scheduling interviews next week. Residents are concerned about ground water contamination and other environmental factors if the permits for the site on Jacoby Road are approved.
The Brighton Township Board of Trustees meeting was standing room only Monday night, as resident after resident spoke against the proposal to reopen the gravel pit on Jacoby Road, west of Kensington Road. The topic, although not on the agenda Monday night, has been a cause of concern for residents for several weeks. The Brighton Township Planning Commission voted in July to recommend approval to the Township Board to award extraction and fill permits to Clearwater Development LLC. The issue has not yet gone before the board and no date has been scheduled for the topic to appear on an agenda. We take a look at how long Brighton residents are traveling when they go to work.
How long does it take you to get to work? In a 2010 American Community Survey from the U.S. Census Bureau, the average commute time for a U.S. worker between 2006-10 was around 25 minutes. According to zipatlas.com, however, Brighton commuters travel an average of 29.8 minutes during their daily commute, which is higher than the national average and the Michigan average of 25.8 minutes. Brighton Township commuters travel for a fraction less time than their city counterparts at an average of 29.2 minutes. In my opinion, Mr. Vick likely got his walking papers in GP Shores cause he couldn't keep his hands out of politics. Instead of staying neutral & serving the public, he acted more like ex-mayor Cooper's political hatchet man.
