Children's Cultural Series at BCPA Begins

Author, musician, and child development specialist Jim Gill will lead a concert for children and adults on Jan. 15.

Brighton Center for the Performing Arts will kick off its 2011 Children's Cultural Series at 2 p.m. Saturday. First to perform: Jim Gill, an award-winning author and musician whose concerts are more about interaction than they are about performance. "When my concerts are a success," Gill says, "I show up with my banjo, but the music that gets created when everyone joins in is more than the sum of what we all contribute individually. And everyone leaves with a bit of the spirit that we all created together." Gill's approach to music and play may be a result of the fact that he "was never very comfortable just entertaining." BCPA Kicks Off 2011 Children's Cultural Series

Mark your calendar. The 2011 Children's Cultural Series at Brighton Center for the Performing Arts opens this month and runs through March. Built in 1994 to serve both the school and the community, BCPA is located on the campus of Brighton High School. Each year, Brighton's community education department hosts a series of shows for adults as well as a series of shows for children. Though both programs have been successful since they began, BCPA's marketing director, Elaine Godlewksi, admits that attendance is down in recent years.
