Following is the speech Brighton High School graduate Harrison Jones delivered Saturday morning at Brighton High School's commencement ceremony at the Eastern Michigan University Convocation Center: Good morning ladies and gentlemen, distinguished guests, parents, families, staff and students of the Class of 2012. I would like to start with a quote from this year's smash hit production of Legally Blonde I feel "there is still so much to learn, so many dreams to earn, but even if I crash and burn ten times a day, I think I'm here to stay, I'm going to find my way." The world today is a place of uncertainty and misgivings, with issues in the Middle East, European debt crisis accompanied by political and economic uncertaintity in the U.S., …
The Brighton High School Class of 2012 Commencements were held at the Eastern Michigan University Convocation Center Saturday morning.
Amidst cheers, laughter, crying - and yes, forbidden beach balls - Brighton High School's Class of 2012 became graduates. Brighton High School Principal Gavin Johnson spoke briefly, calling Brighton's commencements "a different sort of graduation." Johnson said his daughter's graduation was boring listening to adults speak the entire time, so he turned over the ceremony to Class President Lauren Gilardone. Of the more than 500 Brighton graduates, 74 graduated summa cum laude with a grade point average (GPA) of 3.8 or higher, 74 more graduated magna cum laude with a GPA of 3.5 or higher and 47 graduated with cum laude with a GPA of 3.3 or higher. Nine Brighton High School seniors received their diplomas on Thursday.
Nine Brighton High School seniors will spend Saturday in the dugout and on the baseball diamond instead of at their graduation ceremony. The varsity baseball team will play Northville in Novi during the MHSAA regional semifinals. Because the senior team members will have to miss graduation, Brighton Area Schools held a special early graduation ceremony at the Board of Education meeting room in the Brighton Education Community Center on Thursday night. "Personally, I think most of the guys are okay with it," team captain Colin Nash said about missing the graduation ceremony.
