1 Dead in Crash on I-96 Near Wixom Road

A portion of the westbound side of the freeway was shut down on Saturday.

The driver of a vehicle was killed Saturday, after crashing into a camera pole on westbound I-96 near Wixom Road, according to news reports. Michigan State Police told clickondetroit.com that a portion of the freeway was closed Saturday following the accident. According to the Detroit Free Press, the driver was  taken for treatment by helicopter after they were ejected from a vehicle. Car accidents were widespread across Metro Detroit Saturday, as snow squalls moved into the area around noon, causing slippery roads and whiteout conditions. The death on I-96 is the only reported fatality from car accidents on Saturday. Wixom Police: Man in Photos Not Linked to I-96 Shootings

Police say man not believed to be linked 'in any way, shape or form' to October shootings.

Wixom Police say the man whose photos they released Friday as a possible witness to a shooting along the I-96 corridor is not believed to be linked "in any way, shape or form" to the 24 reported shootings along the Interstate 96 corridor since October, according to the Detroit Free Press. According to the report, the man depicted in the photos has cooperated with authorities and police now do not believe the man is connected with the shootings.

I-96 Remains Closed; Semi Leaks Oil into Pond

A semi truck crashed into a ditch and Pond on I-96 near Pleasant Valley Road. A hazardous material company is on scene to clean oil that has spilled into the water and will begin after the truck is removed.

MDOT Hosts Public Meeting for Brighton Township Interchange Improvements

New lanes and bridges are proposed for the I-96/US-23 interchange in Brighton Township.

Two informational meetings will be held on May 17 at Brighton Township Hall to discuss proposed improvements to the I-96/US-23 interchange. The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) has proposed constructing six new through-lanes on I-96 between the current eastbound and westbound lanes of the highway, along with building three new bridges over northbound and southbound US-23, and over Old US-23. The existing lanes of I-96 will become collector/distributor (CD) lanes as a way to help ramp traffic move smoothly through the interchange. The existing six bridges over US-23 and Old US-23 also would be rebuilt.
