There were several highlights during the inauguration ceremony. Tell us what you found to be most memorable.
President Barack Obama was sworn in today for a second term in office. The day was historic in that Obama is one of just a handful of men who have been re-elected to lead the United States. But also that his swearing in fell on the annual celebration of Martin Luther King Jr's birthday and in the 50th anniversary year of King's March on Washington to deliver the "I Have a Dream" speech. Today's festivities included a 19-minute speech from the president in which he gave a shout out to southeast Michigan when he said, "Our journey is not complete until all our children from the streets of Detroit to the hills of Appalachia to the quiet lanes of Newtown, know that they are cared for, and cherised, and always safe from harm." It also included …
As the nation recognizes Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday, here's a look at the civil rights leader's Michigan connections.
Martin Luther King, Jr. left his mark during his lifetime as a civil rights activist, including a couple stops in the Detroit area. 1. Hundreds of local residents and students showed up Monday to the march through downtown Milford.
The sun was out and spirits were high at the 7th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration in Milford. Huron Valley MLK Day Committee Chair Isaac Perry said he was pleased with the turnout, and that students from all over the area, including Howell and Hartland, made the trek to Milford to march in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. "We think, as a committee, that this holiday is very important to honor," Perry said. "The event is something that we didn't have around as a kid when I grew up in Milford, so when I came back here to teach it was one of my priorities. It's important to look at different, more diverse, aspects of this nation's history for inspiration on how to deal with today's challenges."
