Mt. Brighton To Get $10 Million Upgrade

The ski resort is now part of Vail Resorts and will get a facelift this summer.

Vail Resorts will be investing $10 million into Mt. Brighton this summer to improve the ski resort. Vail Resorts, which recently acquired the Michigan ski resort, intends to do the following, according to a press release on the company's website: The enhancements will be done this summer. “We’re thrilled that Mt. Brighton is now a part of our family of resorts. It’s a very special place steeped in snow sports tradition and we intend to honor that legacy by bringing additional enhancements to the ski area and creating more value for Michigan skiers and riders in their season pass choices," said Kirsten Lynch, executive vice president and chief marketing officer of Vail Resorts, in a statement. Brighton 8th-Grader Set to Compete in Her Third Junior Olympics

Scranton Middle School student Morgan Myers will leave for Colorado to compete in the Junior Olympics in alpine ski racing on Friday after school.

For 14-year-old Scranton Middle School 8th-grader Morgan Myers, skiing is just something she does for fun.  Morgan also does it well, qualifying for the third time for the Junior Olympic team in Alpine Ski Racing. She is one of ten Michigan girls in her age bracket that will be competing in Beaver Creek, Colorado this weekend.  "I just feel so free when I go in the course," she said. "I just forget about everything." Morgan will compete in two speed events, downhill and Super-G, and two technical events, GS or Giant Slolam and Slolam. GS involves skiing between sets of poles, or gates, spaced at a greater distance to each other, while Slolam is skiing between poles paced closer together.  This weekend will not be Morgan's first trip to …

Mt. Brighton Has Early Opening; Hopes for Better Season Than Last Year

Mt. Brighton opened for the first time this season Nov. 28.

Mt. Brighton took advantage of the cold weather last week and got busy making snow in order to open early this season on Nov. 28. Although, it's not the earliest opening the ski resort has ever had,  it was earlier than last year's opening of Dec. 3, according to Mt. Brighton President Joe Bruhn. "Anytime you open in November, it's good, but we would have rather of opened a couple days before Thanksgiving because that weekend is a big weekend for this type of business - everybody is home without anything to do on Friday if they don't shop," Bruhn said. "Some years you don't get open in November, other years you get open and you struggle, then make it (snow) again. It's a constant struggle this early. A December opening is late, even for us…

This week's pick features a video of Mt. Brighton snow machines making snow on Monday. Mt. Brighton opened for the first time this season on Wednesday, even though it will close again for the warmer temperatures expected this weekend.
