Trial Date Set for Suspect in I-96 Shootings

Raulie Wayne Casteel will head to his first of two trials on May 6.

The first trial date has been set for the man accused of 24 shootings along the I-96 corridor this past October. According to the Lansing State Journal, Raulie Wayne Casteel, 43, has a trial date set for May 6. Casteel will now face two different trials, one in Oakland County and one in Livingston County. A total of 24 shootings took place between Oct. 16-27 that spanned four counties: Livingston, Oakland, Ingham and Shiawassee. The case is being prosecuted by Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette for Livingston, Shiawassee and Ingham counties. Attorney General's Office Will Prosecute I-96 Shooting Suspect

43-year-old Raulie Casteel is charged with multiple felonious counts related to shootings spanning four counties.

Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette announced Tuesday that his office will lead the prosecution of I-96 shooting suspect, 43-year-old Raulie Casteel, of Wixom, for crimes police say he committed in three counties. The case assignment to the AG's Criminal Division came at the request of of Livingston County Prosecutor David Morse, Ingham County Prosecutor Stuart Dunnings III and Shiawassee County Prosecutor Randy Colbry. Oakland County Prosecutor Jessica Cooper will continue to handle the case filed in that county. "I believe it is beneficial for the prosecution of this case and for the convenience of the witnesses to have a single source of prosecution," Morse said in a press release. Updated: Livingston County Delays Setting Trial Date for Accused I-96 Shooter; Awaiting Forensic Exam Results

Raulie Wayne Casteel had a preliminary examination in Novi on Wednesday morning and appeared in a Livingston County courtroom a few hours later.

Livingston County has delayed setting a pre-trial date in the case of Raulie Wayne Casteel, who is accused of several felonies in connection with shooting incidents along the I-96 corridor, until the completion of competency exams ordered by the 52-1 District Court in Novi on Wednesday morning. Based on events in the 52-1 District Court earlier Wednesday, Livingston County Prosecutor David Morse said his office will hold off on proceeding until the competency test is complete. The Wednesday morning pretrial for Raulie Wayne Casteel lasted just a few minutes, in which Judge Brian W. MacKenzie ordered a forensic review for Casteel's competency and criminal responsibility. I-96 Shooting Suspect Charged with Multiple Felonies in Oakland County

Raulie Wayne Casteel, 43, of Wixom, was arraigned in 52-1 District Court in Novi on Friday afternoon on charges related to shooting incidents that happened in Oakland County. Casteel, who is jailed on a $2 million bond on weapons charges in connection with one of the I-96 shootings in Livingston County, appeared via video link wearing an orange jumpsuit. He was charged with 60 felony counts, including multiple counts of assault with intent to commit murder, in connection with the shootings that happened on Oct. 16 in Wixom.
