Locally Owned Burger Restaurant Continues to Expand

Mikey's Burgers and Fries has been in Brighton for more than a year.

The locally owned and operated two-restaurant chain of Mikey’s Burgers and Fries, with locations in Howell and Brighton, will soon be opening a third location in Hartland. Longtime friends and Howell natives, Big Mike and Little Mike – as they are known around town- opened the original Howell location three years ago and expanded into Brighton more than a year ago.  Growing up in the area, co-owner Mike Donn said that expanding into the neighboring communities was a natural choice. “Mike and are both local, we live in Howell and our kids go to school there,” he said. “It was just the next step.” The Brighton restaurant is located at 9912 E Grand River Ave, next door to Just Baked, and the owner's say the local burger place prides itself on…

POLL: What Do You Care About Most When You Eat Out?

A survey of chefs around the country show locally grown ingredients, healthful kids' choices and sustainable fish rank highest among customers.

Restaurants sometimes surprise us with leading-edge cuisine, but owners and chefs know success depends mainly on pleasing the customer. A new national survey of 2012 menu trends gives high rankings to healthful kids’ meals, regional ingredients and fish that isn't endangered. "Locally sourced meats and seafood" and "locally grown produce" are the top two menu trend choices of nearly 1,800 chefs surveyed by the National Restaurant Association. Nutritious children's meals featuring whole grains, vegetables and fruit also will be on more menus, according to the online survey of American Culinary Federation members last fall. Gluten-free selections and more choices for guests with food allergies also ranks prominently among restaurant trends, …
