On a quiet December evening, approximately 75 Hartland residents came together on the lawn of the Cromaine District Library to mourn the loss of the innocent lives lost during the Sandy Hook Elementary shootings. "I just want to say to you, thank you for showing heart," Terry Prisk, pastor of The River Church said to the crowd on Wedesday. "It's good sometimes to just pause and say, what are we doing in this life?" Performing during the vigil were Mary Jo Bell, Walter Johnston and Trey McLaughlin. Event organizers, Jenifer Thomas, Amy O'Dea and John Miller read the names of the 26 victims to the somber audience and then led them in a version of Silent Night. Brighton Schools security measures are in line with state mandates; will improve with bond construction this summer, according to Superintendent Greg Gray.
Brighton Area Schools have always had ongoing discussions about safety within the district, but the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., has raised the level of intensity, according to Superintendent Greg Gray. "We have a police liaison officer, who's a resource for us," Gray said. about safety discussions between administrators and staff. "We have had discussions, we presently have discussions and we'll continue to have discussions." In the wake of Sandy Hook, Brighton and Hartland residents speak out regarding a bill that will allow concealed firearms in schools and other locations.
On December 14, a 20-year-old gunman walked into the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT and killed 26 people, including 20 children and then took his own life. Also on Friday, the Michigan Legislature approved a bill allowing those with additional training to carry concealed weapons into venues such as schools, day care centers, churches and sport stadiums. The American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten and AFT Michigan President David Hecker urged Michigan Gov. As a teacher I would be much more comfortable knowing that a few staff members were carrying a concealed weapon. In the 60 years all mass shooting where more than 3 people were killed happened in gun banned zones with the exception of the attack on Gabrielle Giffords (http://www.nationalreview.com/articles/335739/facts-about-mass-shootings-john-fund).
