Phase 1 construction projects include new athletic stadiums at both Brighton High School and Scranton Middle School.
Brighton Board of Education members approved contractors for the first phase of bond projects on both Brighton High School and Scranton Middle School during a meeting Monday night. Brighton High School contractors were approved unanimously while Board Members voted 4-2 to approve Scranton Middle School contractors. Board Secretary Nick Fiani and Trustee John Conely opposed the resolution to award bids for the middle school. Treasurer Jay Krause was absent from the meeting. Conely made a failed motion to delay voting until a special meeting next week. Fiani also made a failed motion to approve the contractors with the exception of removing the eight planned tennis courts at Scranton that were originally approved in the design package in …

Principal Mark Wilson will use the social media platform to communicate with parents.
Scranton Middle School will be jumping on the Social Media train this week when it asks parents to follow Principal Mark Wilson on Twitter for school news and updates. Wilson said that in every school he's been in, the number one complaint of parents is that they don't know what is going on in their childrens' schools. "Scranton does a weekly newsletter in the building, so we've heard a lot less of that than any other place I've been," he said. "But at the same time, you send out a newsletter on Friday, and by Wednesday, they may not remember what's going on. So this is just a really unique way of communicating. I know some parents just live on Twitter and love experiencing life in sound bytes and this is one way of really addressing that …

More than 25 residents attended the School Board meeting Monday night to express concerns over the design package.
Brighton Area Schools Board of Education members unanimously approved design and development plans for phase one bond projects throughout the district, despite about 10 requests from residents during the call to the public to delay the vote. Brighton Superintendent Greg Gray said the first phase will cost a little more than $20 million. The approved plan includes revised design of the Scranton Middle School athletic field, which was moved from the front of the school to the back. However, board members changed the field's lighting and public announcement system into alternates that the they can determine to include or exclude after the bidding process and before construction begins. Lighting, sound and parking were the three main concerns …

Residents urged school board members to postpone the vote on the bond design and development package in order to consider moving the football stadium back in front of the middle school.
Dozens of residents armed with participation charts and traffic photos attended the Brighton Area Schools Board of Education meeting Monday night to protest the proposed Scranton Middle School athletic field as part of the $88.4 million bond passed by voters in May. Many residents are not happy that the football field will now be located behind the school, according to design plans from the bond architect, SHW Group. The location was changed because placing it in front of the school would have overlapped into a secondary septic system and an additional easement required on the Scranton Roundabout, Brighton Superintendent Greg Gray said in an informational meeting Oct. 10. Many residents urged school board members to postpone the vote on …

Brighton eighth-grade leaders help underclassmen find their way around on the first day back to school.
Hundreds of kids poured off Brighton Area School buses in front of Scranton Middle School this morning all dressed in their brand new back-to-school clothes -- all except about 30 8th-graders who sported neon orange Scranton Leadership shirts. These standout students spent the morning helping fellow students open lockers, find their way to classes and making sure new students acclimate well on the first day of the new year. This is the first year for the program at Scranton. Amy McCarthy, a Scranton eighth-grade English teacher and one of the faculty sponsors for the program, said staff members decided it would be the best way to get kids involved with the school. "The first week of school is super stressful, so these first four days, …

Brighton High School and Scranton Middle School will gain new teachers this fall.
After more than 20 retirements over the past few months, Brighton Area Schools hired three new teachers during its board meeting Monday night. Jeffery Beane and Samantha Visel will be teaching math and science, respectively, at Brighton High School while Christina Wilson, also a cheer coach, will teach English Language Arts at Scranton Middle School. Brighton High School Principal Henry Vecchioni made the recommendations to board members and said he expects to have about 16 new hires total this year. Wilson comes to Brighton from Gibraltar Carlson and will bring with her four past state cheerleading championships in Division 2. Beane will be leaving his position as an administrator in Brandon School District in Ortonville. Beane said one …

Mark Wilson will leave his current position as executive director of instruction at Farmington Public Schools.
After spending the last three years as the executive director of instruction at Farmingington Public Schools, Brighton resident Mark Wilson is leaving his inner office position to get back to the kids. Wilson was recently hired by Brighton Area Schools as the new Scranton Middle School principal. He will replace administrator Debbie Higgins, who will be returning to the high school. "In my current role, I don't interface with kids on a daily basis and that has been a real challenge for me," Wilson said. "I got into education to be with kids and work with kids - that's what I wanted to do. So in my principalship, I would see myself often in classrooms, working side by side with teachers and kids. I'm very much looking forward to interacting…

The 12-point grading system Scranton Middle School will pilot during its second quarter and second semester drew both criticism and support during the Brighton Board of Education meeting Monday night.
Scranton Middle School's plans to implement a new 12-point grading scale pilot program this school year stirred up debate during the Brighton Board of Education meeting Monday night. Scranton 7th Grade Principal Debbie Higgins and 8th Grade Principal Kirk Hobson presented the program to the school board. The goal of the 12-point grading scale is to eliminate the numerical difference between letter grades. Currently, A,B,C,D and E grades have a 10-point difference. But the difference between E and a zero is 59 points, even though they both are failing grades. Students get a zero grade when they fail to turn in or complete an assignment. "There is a discrepency in the grading system," Higgins said. "The effect of the zero when averaged with …

Eighth Graders spent the day learning about the Civil War through demonstrations, displays and participation on May 6.
Civil War Day has been an annual tradition at Scranton Middle School for the eighth graders not participating in the class trip for almost 20 years, according to Principal Ken Hamman. This year, which marks the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, students participated in presentations given by volunteers throughout the school, such as square dancing, learning to communicate with signal flags, stenciling, learning about military life with a campsite and artillery demonstration, a concert by the 5th Michigan Regiment Band and classes about soldiers’ rations and civil war artifacts. Eighth grader Drita Zuncaj, 14, was enthusiastic about the activities of the day when asked about the best part of the program. “We got to play with the muskets…

Never mind the fact that people in precincts surrounding Scranton voted AGAINST the bond. How undemocratic that Brighton citizens, who purposely choose to live with noise and streetlights, should be allowed to vote on a facility, which diminishes our quality of life and has no impact on them. We chose to live in an area without lights, sidewalks, etc. because we want a rural feel and to be closer…   more ›
