Jordan Amine and Aaron Calderon are Brighton High School's 'most winningest' wrestlers.
Brighton High School Seniors Jordan Amine and Aaron Calderon will soon trade up their familiar black and orange wrestling singlets to maize and blue as the two head to the University of Michigan to compete in the fall. "It's always been a dream for me to go to the University of Michigan, but to be honest, I didn't know that they were interested in me as a wrestler, but when I found out, I was pretty excited," Aaron said. The two are Brighton High School's 'most winningest' wrestlers, according to Coach Sam Amine, Jordan's father. Amine said that both students have 3.5 grade point averages (GPAs) and were academic all-staters. Jordan hit his 200th career win during his senior season, while Aaron had 183 and won the state championship last…

The Highland grocer helped raise money for the University of Michigan Cardiovascular Center Tuesday evening.
Colasanti’s Market in Highland hosted the Bo Schembechler “Heart of a Champion” fundraiser Tuesday evening. Customers purchased special bottles of wine and had the bottles signed by former University of Michigan football players who played for Schembechler. Colasanti’s Market, the University of Michigan Cardiovascular Center and Cathy Schembechler put together this charity event to support research that will lead to new methods to prevent, diagnose and treat heart disease. Rob Knue, wine manager at Colasanti’s Market, organized this event for the third time, which ran from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. According to Knue, "for each bottle of wine purchased, the U of M Cardiovascular Center receives $2 per bottle." A small team of former University of …

Saturday's Michigan vs. Michigan State game was close in both scoring and online reader support.
Saturday's game at the Big House came down to the wire, with Michigan beating Michigan State 12-10. The rivalry was nearly as close online in a Patch.com reader poll. Readers were asked to show off their Michigan or Michigan State pride by uploading photos of their favorite team. When the photos were counted at midnight Sunday, the Spartans squeaked by with a 35-30 victory over the Wolverines. Several photos featured memorabilia from both teams, which resulted in each team being awarded a point. If you missed the photo gallery, there's still time to check it out. And while the photos have already been tallied, you can still add your shots from your favorite team by clicking on the upload link.

It's that time of the year again: fall in Michigan, otherwise known as the green vs. blue season. The big game (this year it's at the Big House) is coming up at 3:30 p.m. Saturday. To get ready for the rivalry, Patch.com sites across Michigan are asking readers to show off their Michigan or Michigan State pride. Add a photo to our online gallery; we'll rotate the featured photo each day until kickoff. The Spartans are 4-3 coming off a double-overtime loss this weekend to Iowa. Willis Ward, a University of Michigan football player in the 1930's, will be honored by his school for the first time on Saturday.
Not many 8-year-olds recognize injustice when they see it, and fewer still decide to stand up and do something about it. This is not the case with Genna Urbain, an 8-year-old third-grader at Hilton Elementary, when she saw the documentary Black and Blue, a story about Willis Ward, an African-American University of Michigan football player who was benched on Oct. 20, 1934, when Georgia Tech refused to play football if Ward was allowed to take the field. Not only was he benched for that game, Ward was barred from the stadium, as well. It was the only time in school history that a player was benched because of his race. Genna decided instantly that the whole situation was unfair to Ward, especially since he has never been honored by the …
