Best Thing We Ate This Week: Downtown Main's Spinach & Artichoke Dip

I had to try this appetizer during Brighton Patch's Happy Hour Office Hours this week.

Brighton Patch hosted Happy Hour Office Hours at Downtown Main Martini Bar & Grille this past Wednesday. So while we were meeting people, myself and other Patch editors got to sample a few things on the menu. Not only did I get a nifty green "Patchtini," but I also got to try their Spinach & Artichoke Dip appetizer. The dip was really good, topped with melted cheese. But the chips absolutely made the dish. The hand-made lawash chips put a different spin on one of my favorite appetizers and I just ate it up - literally!

Best Thing We At This Week: Tim Horton's Bran Muffin

Eating healthy doesn't always have to be boring.

I've been making a conscious effort to eat healthier - snacking on strawberries instead of chocolate, things like that. So when I had a craving for something sweet this week, I decided to try a bran muffin from Tim Horton's. I would have had the low-fat blueberry, but they were all out. So I went with the cranberry-blueberry bran muffin and I was surprised at how good it was. I've never had a bran muffin before, but they're a great source of fiber, with four grams or more per serving.

Best Thing We Ate This Week: Ritter's Ice Cream

Nothing feels more like spring than eating an ice cream cone in the warm weather.

Ritter's Frozen Custard and saw a line out front waiting to be served. I've been hearing about how great Ritter's is since I moved to Brighton, so I thought I'd stop and see for myself. I'm a simple girl, I prefer a vanilla ice cream waffle cone with rainbow sprinkles. You can't forget the sprinkles - a fact my husband loves to tease me about. Since the weather was sunny, if a little chilly, I decided to sit outside and eat my cone - which was pretty good. I can't wait until the weather really warms up to enjoy eating outside even more.

Best Thing We Ate This Week: Grilled Chicken Caesar Wrap

Brighton Patch Ad Manager Susanne Spruit and I had a delicious lunch at The Wooden Spoon this week.

When Brighton Patch Ad Manager Susanne Spruit told me she would be in town this week and suggested we meet for a business lunch, the first place that came to mind was The Wooden Spoon. The restaurant always has delicious food made with the freshest ingredients, and they have a special lunch menu from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Plus the waitstaff is always friendly and helpful, even suggesting things to try. This time, I decided on the grilled chicken Caesar wrap. I've been on this Caesar salad kick lately - I just can't seem to get enough of it. So I thought instead of getting the salad - again - I could have a wrap. That dish has now become my favorite chicken Caesar anything. It was delicious, if a little messy to eat. I really enjoyed the …

Best Thing We Ate This Week: Marv's Bacon Cheddar Burgers

The heat wave this week made for perfect grilling weather.

The weather this week was absolutely beautiful. All I wanted to do was break out the grill and enjoy it. The only question was, what to grill? So I decided to take a trip into Marv's Meats for the first time - I wasn't disappointed. The meat market and bakery has a vast array of anything your heart desires. I couldn't decide on just one thing for dinner, so I decided to get some city chicken and try the bacon cheddar burgers that caught my eye. Marv's has several different kinds of pre-made hamburger patties. The bacon cheddar looked too good to pass up, with pieces of bacon and cheese mixed in with the ground round. The burgers turned out to be absolutely delicious. They're definitely a new favorite in my house. I am looking forward to …

Best Thing We Ate This Week: Biggby Coffee

A hot latte is just what I needed to perk me up this week.

I've never been a huge coffee drinker and since I'm trying to cut down on my caffeine intake, I maybe have on cup a week. And every now and then, I treat myself to a flavored latte. My all-time favorite latte is Starbuck's Pumpkin Spice, but since it's a seasonal fall drink, I had to content myself with something different. So this week, I stopped in at Biggy Coffee on Grand River Avenue. A good friend of mine works at a Biggby and suggested I try a Butter Bear Latte. A Butter Bear is a butterscotch and caramel flavored latte. Since I enjoy both of those flavors, I gave it a try. It definitely hit the spot and warmed me up at the same time.

Butter Bear is a favorite mine but lately I have been drinking the Cherry Mocha Kiss with soy milk and no whip. My special weekly treat.   more ›

Best Thing We Ate This Week: Panera's Broccoli Cheddar Soup

After a long day in the cold, wet snow, a bowl of soup is just what the doctor ordered.

Though Brighton didn't get as much snow as the National Weather Service predicted, Friday was cold and wet. So naturally, I thought the quickest way to warm up would be get something hot in my stomach. So I headed off to Panera Bread on Grand River Avenue to run by the drive-thru on my way home. Panera's Broccoli Cheddar soup has long been one of my favorites and I decided to treat myself with a bowl for dinner. With chopped broccoli, bits of carrots and cheesy flavor, it goes down smooth and fills you right up. It also goes a long way in driving away the chill of a cold, wintery day.

Best Thing We Ate This Week: Salad at Outback Steakhouse

My husband and I chose to have our Valentine's Day dinner at Outback Steakhouse

As Valentine's Day rolled around this week, my husband and I decided to use one of our Christmas gift cards and have dinner at Outback Steakhouse. The Outback has been one of my favorite restaurants for a long time now, but not for it's steaks or Bloomin' Onion - for it's simple house salad. I cannot get enough of the restaurant chain's house dressing, a mustard vinaigrette. My husband often makes fun of me, asking "who goes to a steakhouse for a salad?" Well... I do! We both enjoyed a great meal. My husband ordered a loaded baked potato while I gave up my potato option in favor of broccoli to suit my newly imposed diet. I also had to pass on the delicious pre-dinner bread, but the salad made it all worthwhile.

Outback is my favorite steakhouse too. Their salad dressings are so good because they make them homemade. No bottled dressing shipped on a truck! I love that.   more ›

Best Thing We Ate This Week: Bar None's Calamari

After stuffing ourselves with turkey, Bar None Steak + Fish sounded pretty good.

After three Thanksgiving dinners with all the trimmings, my husband and I were really not in the mood for leftovers. Yes, you read that right - three turkey dinners with my husband's family, my mom's family and my dad's family. So we left the leftovers in the refrigerator and decided to try out Bar None Steak + Fish. After looking over the menu, we decided to order an appetizer - something we usually don't do because then it's tough to finish our meals. But the calamari sounded too good to pass up. When the dish arrived, I was a little unsure of how it would taste because it was mixed in with onions as well as red, green, mild and hot peppers. It turned out to be the best calamari my husband or I have ever tasted. I've never had peppers …

Best Thing We Ate This Week: Bagger Dave's Legendary Burger

Bagger Dave's' Create Your Own Legend menu option really hit the spot.

As one of Brighton's newest residents, I'm finally getting to know the people, the businesses and now it's time for my favorite part - getting to know the food. So each week, I'll share my discoveries with Brighton Patch readers. This week, my husband and I stopped for lunch at Bagger Dave's. It was our first time eating at the chain, and while looking over the menu, I saw something that really appealed to me: "Your burger is like your fingerprint. No two are exactly the same. To go against your burger DNA is something the laws of nature won’t put up with, and neither will we here at Bagger Dave’s." On each table in the restaurant is a 'Create Your Own Legend' checklist with all of the burger (and french fry) toppings a customer could want…
