What Would You Improve in Brighton in 2013?

If you could make a New Year's resolution for Brighton, what would it be?

More than 45 percent of Americans make a resolution every year, according to statisticbrain.com. Some people vow to live a healthier lifestyle, others promise to spend more time with family, and many say they will try to save money. As millions of Americans make resolutions to improve their lives, what could we do right here in Brighton to make it an even better place to live? The City of Brighton has been working on a Mill Pond Master Plan update to improve Mill Pond Park and is also working with SELCRA to install a splash plan during summer 2013. What is on your Brighton wish list? What is one thing you would improve in 2013? Tell us in the comment section below or add a note in our Local Voices section about why you love living here!

Brighton Area Feel Good Stories

Here is a roundup of feel good stories about people helping those in need to bring on some holiday spirit.

A group of approximately 50 Fenton area friends are helping make Christmas brighter for kids at Whaley Children’s Center in Flint this year. They fulfilled the wish lists of a 10-year-old girl, Destiny, and an 11-year-old boy, Brenden, and purchased more items to help others at the children’s center. The gifts the group provided will help all 48 of the formerly abused and neglected children, ages 5-17, in the residential program at Whaley Children’s Center. The young people receive clinical therapy there. Sarah Cromer, of Brighton, and Stephanie Perkins, of Hartland, organized a donation effort to buy 26 American Girl Dolls for sick children, reported Hartland Patch. By the time the order for the American Girl dolls needed to placed, …

Listen: Top 7 Most Annoying Christmas Songs

Brighton residents speak out on which Christmas songs make them grind their teeth.

Christmas music comes to stay on radio stations earlier and earlier every year. And it seems like the same songs are remade over and over and then they're all played on the radio repeatedly, like a broken record. Brighton Patch readers shared certain songs that they just can't stand this time of year on Facebook. Trish Kilbane commented that all Christmas music is too much when that's all she hears for hours on end at work. Linda Rowland Bowen's vote went to "I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas" by Gayla Peevey. "That horrid hippopotamus song was cute the first time I ever heard it...afterwards, not so much," she wrote. "I just want to hear some of the songs sung in the 'old classic' way they are meant to be sung," Jill Sullins wrote. "I …

How to Celebrate the Holidays on a Budget

Here are 10 ways to have fun and spread holiday cheer in Novi without breaking the bank.

This year’s holiday season can be special for you and your family regardless of your budget. Here are some fun tips for creating new holiday traditions while saving money. 1) Make your cards from recycled materials. Cards can be made from paper grocery bags, cereal boxes, used file folders and even last year’s holiday cards. Feature your family’s artwork and use recycled wrapping paper or paper from catalogs and magazines for backgrounds. A great resource for making cards from recycled materials is "Creative Correspondence" by Michael and Judy Jacobs, available at Barnes & Noble or on Amazon.com.  2) Have fun together and create a festive decoration by making a gingerbread house. You can bake the gingerbread yourself and use royal icing to…

Dealing with Holiday Stress

When things get to be too much, it's okay to take a moment for yourself.

Let's face it, the holidays are not always filled with peace, love and happiness. In fact, for some people, they can be downright stressful. I'm one of the later people. Every year as December rolls around, I start to cringe. See, in my family, not only do we celebrate Christmas, but we happen to celebrate six birthdays too: mine, my husband's, my brother's, two of my sisters in law and my grandfather's. So in addition to all the Christmas gifts I get to buy, I also have to come up with birthday gifts. Not to mention the incredibly nice Happy Birthday message from the State of Michigan reminding me to pay my tabs. It's enough to make a saint stress out. The holidays have not always been this way. Not too long ago, they were something to …
