Moms Talk: Should Brighton Breed More Tiger Mothers?
How strict is too strict in raising our kids? Is our Western Culture too relaxed in our parenting approach?
Amy Chua’s book, Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother, is quickly climbing the best seller list and sparking debate over how strict parents should be. Chua's non-fiction book reveals the parenting style of an "Old World" Chinese mother. In it, she details pushing her children to be their best by calling them degrading names and motivating them with threats of burning their stuffed animals, among others. Chua summed up her parental philosophy last week in a Wall Street Journal article titled “Why Chinese Mothers are Superior.” While her parenting style can seem harsh, and even appalling, she argues that it had great results. Yes, of course. That implies the parents are actually letting them make decisions for themselves... Consequences not punishments. Parent decisions that are poor need to be discussed to set an example (see Americas Funniest Home Video if you don't think there aren't parents out there who don't forsee consequences and make poor choices! ) LOL When they are small they need to be simple decisions. …   more ›
