New Technology Arrives in Brighton Area Schools

A number of different technologies are being piloted in the district before large-scale purchases are made.

There has been a general air of excitement around Brighton Area Schools for the last few weeks as students and staff members see shiny new Macbooks, iPads, iPods, Chromebooks and other new technologies coming into classrooms.  These are just a few examples of many devices being tested in the district during pilot projects before any large scale purchases are made, according to Director of Technology Elson Liu.  "I think what we're finding out is that there's going to be a place for all of the different types of technologies," Liu said."Talking to our committee, I don't think we're going to become an all iPad school or an all something school. Mrs. Tompkins, The technology is all part of the bond passed in May. The programs currently running are pilot programs designed to determine what we will implement in the coming year to our technical programs. The money cannot be spent on teachers as the bond is strictly for buildings and technology. You will see these programs in the learning disabled programs as we implement the technology. Brighton School Board Awards Bids for Technology Infrastructure

The first technology bid package was for about $3 million.

Brighton Area School Board members unanimously voted to approve the first bid package for the technology portion of the $88.4 million bond issue voters passed in May for wired network infrastructure, a wireless network and a new phone system. The bid package was about $3 million, according to Superintendent Greg Gray. "In order to plug in all of our new devices, you have to have the infrastructure to support it and we presently don't have the infrastructure to support it, but the $3 million approved tonight will put us on the cutting edge of technology now and into the future," he said.
