Baby Business Hopes to Bloom in Brighton

John and Nellie Sowash recently opened Bloom Baby & Kids, a natural parenting shop and resource center in Brighton.

Combining two important resources for parents- supplies and education- the local owners of Bloom Baby & Kids hope to fill a niche in the Brighton business community by opening a combination natural parenting shop and resource center.

“We know this community very well and we always wanted a store like this open,” owner John Sowash said.

Located at 222 W. Grand River, the Sowash family wanted to create not only a kid-friendly environment, but a parent-friendly one as well. With a welcoming play area, large retail space and separate classroom, the efficient layout is meant to accomodate all the needs of their customers.

The parents of three young children ages 4, 3 and 1, the Brighton couple understands the hectic lives of parents and also the current products on the market needed to do the job.

“Most of everything that comes out of this store comes from our own experience as parents,” Sowash said. “Pretty much every product we have in here, we use personally.”

Besides diapers, clothing, bibs and strollers, other extra touches include jewelry for mom and ultrasounds transferred to canvas prints - a creative idea the couple came up with, according to Sowash.

Bloom Baby & Kids will also offer classes for parents and children as well as professional portrait sessions by Janel Moon, a Howell photographer, who will bring her studio to the store on a regular basis.

“As parents, we know how difficult it is to get pictures of your kids,” Sowash said. “So, once a quarter, she (Moon) comes in and every 20 minutes, we just rotate them (kids) through.”

Bloom Baby & Kids is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. every Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursdays.

A grand opening event will take place on May 4 with a ribbon cutting ceremony. The public is welcome to attend.
