Brighton Father and Son Presumed Dead in Wilderness

Earl Zellen of Brighton, and his son Matt Zellen, from Bloomfield Hills, went missing in the Canadian wilderness while on a fishing trip in July.

A private memorial service for a Brighton dad and his Bloomfield Hills son will be held Friday. The two went missing in Canada in July while on a fishing trip in a remote area, and have been presumed dead.

According to an article on WHMI, Earl and Matt Zellen were reported missing July 29 after they missed their charter flight back home.

The article states that their fishing gear and boat were spotted on a lake in Nunavut, and that the boat had run out of gas.

Police called off the search for the pair Aug. 1.

The Detroit Free Press said the lake was in a remote area of Canada–a couple of hundred miles from the Arctic Circle. The two had been to the spot for a similar trip the year before.

Police authorities told the Free Press that it's likely the two men fell into the extremely cold water and died.

Both men were experienced outdoorsmens, according to their families.
