Crime Report: Gun Fired During Hartland Road Rage Incident

Police confiscated a man's gun and Concealed Pistol License (CPL) after the weapon was dischared in a road rage incident on June 22 on North U.S. 23 near Highland Road in Hartland Township, police said.

Police said a man in a red truck told police that as he was traveling north on US-23 behind a blue Honda at 70 miles per hour (the unposted speed limit), the driver slammed on his brakes, forcing the man to swerve off the road onto the left shoulder to avoid hitting the car in front of him and traffic. Police said the man told them he heard a loud bang when he came alongside the Honda and saw the driver waving his hand around. The man told police he called 911 and immediately went to Woody's Towing at the request of dispatch.

Police said the man driving the Honda stopped at the request of dispatch near Runyan Lake and White Lake Roads and told police that his Glock gun was in the center console, with the clip removed. The man told police he was driving down North US-23 when the red truck began to drive aggressively behind him, so he let off the gas, but did not slam on his brakes, police said.

The man told police the truck almost hit him from behind, then drove to the left of his car on the shoulder when he feared for his safety and that of his son's who was in the passenger seat, police said. The man told police he pulled out his gun and fired one shot towards the ground to scare the truck off.

Police said possible criminal charges could be pending.

Credit card fraud at Walmart

A Hartland Township woman reported a case of credit card fraud on Monday when she discovered her card had been used during an online purchase for $200.31 at Walmart on June 22, police said.

Police said the woman contacted the store and found that someone charged a dresser to her during an online checkout and used her name in a new email account.

The woman was able to stop the delivery and clear her account. She canceled her credit card, according to the report. The woman told police that the the item was being shipped to Pontiac but Walmart would give no further information without a police report, police said.

Police said woman told them she did not know how someone could get her credit card information since she never lets anyone use her card other than herself.

Cash, cigarettes stolen from gas station

The Brighton Township BP gas station on Old U.S. 23 and Hilton Road was broken into on Sunday around 1:27 a.m., police said.

A caller told police he saw a person leaving the front gas station window wearing a black hoodie and leave in an older model Chevrolet Impala or Monte Carlo, according to the police report. Police said they were unable to locate the car in the area when they arrived.

Police said the gas station's southeast corner window was broken and the rear door was found open. The owner told police the surveillance system was not working and that he had been having problems with it, according to the police report.

The owner told police that about $500 in cash was stolen from the front registers along with another $500 cash from additional registers behind the cabinet, according to the report. Also stolen were $200 in coins from a coin box that sat on the counter, the Lotto drawer with $100 inside and about 200 packs of cigarettes, according to the report.

Purse stolen during Balloonfest

A woman reported her purse stolen from her locked car during the Michigan Challenge Balloonfest on Sunday, according to police.

The women returned to her car where she parked on the 2000 block of West Grand River Avenue in Howell Township around 1 p.m. and saw her back passenger window was smashed out, according to the police report.

The woman's black Coach purse, valued at $200, contained her Coach wallet, valued at $50, with her identification and some credit cards.

Police said nothing else in the car was touched.

Purse stolen from Tanger Outlet parking lot

A woman reported her purse stolen from her locked car at Tanger Outlet Mall in Howell on Sunday between 1:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m., police said.

The woman had left her purse on the passenger side floorboard with a jacket covering it while working at the Pac-Sun store, according to the police report. When she went to leave, she noticed the passenger side window broken and her Coach purse, valued at $300, stolen.

The woman's purse contained her driver's license, social security card, multiple credit and debit cards and an iPod Nano, valued at $100.

Police said they found a gray rock lying on the passenger seat in the car and that nothing else was missing.

Tools stolen from unlocked car

A man reported tools stolen from his unlocked car sometime between 11 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. Sunday on the 2000 block of Murray Hill Rd in Hartland Township, police said.

Among the items stolen were two Bostitch Crown Staplers valued at $500; a DeWalt 18-Volt trim gun valued at $400; a Kreg pocket screw system valued at $100; a Ridgid Angle Grinder valued at $50; a 10-foot aluminum break valued at $800 and two DeWalt drills valued at $300.
