Wounded Warrior Week is Making a Difference at BHS

Leadership is making this year's Wounded Warrior Week a huge success. It was from February 10th until the 14th. Every year Leadership comes together to decide which organization to donate to and this year they chose the Wounded Warrior Project. From inspirational speakers to juniors versus seniors volleyball game, Leadership is doing a lot to raise awareness for this charity.

“All of the proceeds go directly to the Wounded Warrior Project which helps veterans in need when they come home,” Leadership student Sarah Wood said.

Wounded Warrior Project was founded after the events following 9/11. The purpose of the Wounded Warrior Project is to raise awareness about veterans who need assistance from the public and help set up special programs designed to help provide unique treatment centers for those who need them. It also offers veterans emergency services such as food, shelter and money.

During third hour on Februrary 11th, teachers had the opportunity to take their classes down to the BCPA to listen to four veterans. They shared some great stories about their time serving the country. It was a Q and A type interview and all of them shared. Some talked about how to pass time, some talked about their favorite memory and  one even shared their story about getting to see their son being born over Skype while he was millions of miles away. All of them were so heartfelt it was a great way to spread awareness.

“I thought the inspirational speakers were amazing. It really opened my eyes to what it is like in the military. They all had great stories,” Senior Andrea Rickard said.

This year BHS has had many events to help raise money. The school store sold Wounded Warrior T-shirts for seven dollars all week.

This year the dunk tank returned. Teachers have volunteered to be dunked into freezing cold water. Luckily it wasn’t “too cold”.

They had some puppy chow for sale during on lunches on Thursday, February 13th. Students could also write letters to soldiers in front of the school store.

On Friday, February 14th they honored the veterans during halftime game at the girls basketball game and the veterans also got in for free. They created a pom team made up of boys for this occasion.

“I think that the best part of this week was getting to see two men who were in the Airforce be reunited,” teacher Arnella Park said. “During halftime at the girls basketball game we honored the veterans and on the sign up sheet we found two men who were in the same unit around 1952. We called their names and they got to discuss their times in the Air Force. It was amazing to see them reunite after all this time.”
