Brighton Optimists Donate $1,000 to Howell High School Constitutional Debate Team

The donation will help the student group pay for their trip to the National Finals in Washington D.C.

The Brighton Optimist Club donated $1,000 to the Howell High School ‘We The People’ constitutional debate team, to assist them with their trip to the National Finals in Washington, D.C.

One member also added $175 to that amount.

Aaron Osborne and Heather Buja, members of the team, gave a presentation to the Brighton Optimists and talked about their upcoming trip to represent the State of Michigan at the National Finals.

Brighton Optimist Club Treasurer Mike Aubert presented the check to Buja and Osborne.

The Brighton Optimist Club has been supporting the youth of the community since 1977. Some of the projects they are involved in are an Oratorical Contest to promote public speaking skills, and an Essay Contest, both of which award $500 scholarships; a free Spring Break Fun Day (April 2, 2013) geared towards elementary school-aged children, and their Free Fishing Derby For Kids (June 8, 2013) – the longest continuously running youth fishing derby in the State of Michigan.

The Brighton Optimists are looking for service-minded community members to join and help with their activities. They meet Thursday mornings at 7:30 a.m. at the Grand River Grill, 2394 Genoa Business Park Drive, Brighton 48114. The last Thursday of the month is an evening meeting, 6:30 p.m., at the Lil’ Chef Restaurant, 101 Brookside Ln., Brighton. Meals are free to first time visitors.
