Business SOS: Library's New Resource Center Helps Entrepreneurs

Librarians and resources help established and aspiring business owners.

Want to start your own business? Wonder where to begin? Or do you already have a small business but could use some pointers to navigate the challenging economy?

Find help at . The library's newly opened Business Resource Center caters specifically to those who own their own business or are looking for advice on how to start one.

The resource center features materials on every kind of self-owned business, from day care, pet care and landscaping to wedding consulting, photography and much, much more.

“Here at the library, we have the ability to help patrons find exactly what they are looking for to achieve their dream of owning their own business," said MaryAnn Scott, head of adult services at the library.

Staff trained with business degrees are on hand to walk you through the process of developing or maintaining a business in today’s economy. Patrons can make an appointment with a business librarian who will show them how to create a business plan right from the beginning.

With the center's new, easy-to-use software program Business Plan Pro, clients can see what is needed to open a new business from the ground up and can compare businesses with each other.

The Michigan Small Business & Technology Development Center of Livingston County has partnered with BDL to provide these simple yet thorough materials so that anyone can come in and get the information, Scott said.

"Sarah Perry, the marketing librarian, and I are trained in business and can walk you through everything from creating a business plan to social networking online," Scott said, adding that the library also offers drop-in computer classes to help patrons.
