Golf Camp Round-Up

A quick look at summer 2011 golf camps for kids.

Got the next Phil "Lefty" Mickelson  or Michelle Wie on your hands? Help them polish their skills by signing them up for lessons or a day camp at one of Brighton’s golf courses. Here’s a look at this summer’s camp schedule.

Rudy Catal’s Junior Golf Academy at The Jackal at Mt. Brighton

Senior PGA member and two-time Michigan Senior Series Champion Rudy Catal will run two 5-day golf camps for children ages 8-14 at this summer. On each of the first four days, participants will focus on one skill—day 1, putting; day 2, pitching/chipping; day 3, full swinging with short and mid irons; and day 4, full swinging with long irons and woods. On the fifth and final day, participants will compete in each of the skill categories.

Catal, who won the 1997 Senior PGA tour and the 2001 Senior Golf Professional of the Year award, has been an instructor at University of Michigan Golf Camp of Champions for 15 years.

The first session of Catal’s Junior Golf Academy runs from June 20–24 and the second session runs July 11–15. The fee for either session is $105. For more information or to register, call Rudy Catal at 734-476-6551.

The First Tee Golf Camp at Huron Meadows Metropark

The First Tee, a Detroit-based non-profit organization, will host a 3-day golf camp for children ages 7-17 at June 28-30. In addition to putting, chipping, pitching and full swinging, participants will learn game rules, course safety, and golf etiquette.

The fee for the camp is $110. Participants will receive a hat, daily snack, and discounted course fees for future play. For more information or to register, visit The First Tee’s website.

Junior Golf Camp at Oak Pointe Country Club

will host two golf camps this summer for children of Oak Pointe members. The first camp runs June 21–24, and the second camp runs July 5–8. Participants will be broken into groups according to skill level and age.

Oak Pointe also offers private lessons for kids 16 and under. Private lessons are $50 per hour.

Indoor Golf Simulators at Golf-O-Rama

Need a rainy day retreat? Try , Brighton’s answer to the impossibility of an indoor golf course. Golf-O-Rama houses three golf simulators that feature more than 100 courses, including Pebble Beach and St. Andrew’s. Booth rental for an unlimited number of golfers is $20 per hour during the week and $24 per hour on weekends.
