Here are five tidbits of news and information we hope you'll find useful or entertaining.

1. The weather

Today will be mostly sunny and breezy, with wind gusts as high as 25 mph, and a high near 33 degrees, according to the National Weather Service. Tonight will be mostly cloudy, with a 30 percent chance of snow showers, and a low around 22 degrees.

2. Gasoline prices

Here's a quick survey of the lowest per-gallon prices for regular gasoline in the Brighton area as of Tuesday night, according to DetroitGasPrices.com via GasBuddy.com:

  • Costco, 6700 Whitmore Lake Rd: $3.15
  • CITGO, 1050 E Grand River: $3.17
  • Mobil, 9925 Spencer Rd: $3.19

3. Euchre

Play Euchre at the Brighton Senior Center today at 10 a.m. Drop in cost is $2.

4. Brighton Optimist Club Essay Contest

5. On This Day in History

According to History.com, on this day in 1919, Prohibition takes effect. The movement for the prohibition of alcohol began in the early 19th century, when Americans concerned about the adverse effects of drinking began forming temperance societies. By the late 19th century, these groups had become a powerful political force, campaigning on the state level and calling for total national abstinence. In December 1917, the 18th Amendment, also known as the Prohibition Amendment, was passed by Congress and sent to the states for ratification.
