Hey Brighton! Do You Call it Soda or Pop?

We're curious. What do you call a sweetened carbonated beverage?

It’s soda, silly!

Although I may have spent the majority of my life in Michigan, I haven’t lived in the beautiful mitten state for all of it, which means in my family, we call it by the correct term.

My husband, however, born and bred in Michigan disagrees. However, he was never able to get the term “pop” to stick with our children.

And just recently, the soda/pop debate really took off in my home when my kids ordered a soda at a local restaurant and were questioned by the waiter about where they were from because, “here in Michigan, it’s called pop.”

Accusing looks from my children typically follow these types of statements since they are very quick to blame me for this perceived social faux pas, but still just can’t seem to bring themselves to call it "pop."

But apparently, our soda family is in the minority.

According to a dialect survey, results from an area closest to the Brighton area show that 67.8 percent of residents call it pop while only 23.7 percent call it soda.

There are also 5.2 percent of people who call it Coke with only 3.3 percent calling it a soft drink.

So, Brighton, what do you call a sweetened carbonated beverage? Tell us in comments.
