Brighton High School students lost to staff members during the second annual Students vs. Staff Basketball Game.

Brighton Area Schools Staff members defended their title in the second ever Students vs. Staff Basketball Game at Brighton High School Wednesday night.

Although the score was close the entire game, staff members pulled ahead in the second half to win the game 46-37. Last year, staff members won by only one point.

The Students vs. Staff Basketball Game is run by the Junior Class Council as a way to raise money for prom. Only Brighton High School seniors play in the game. Students who want to participate sign up and 25 players are randomly drawn to make up the team.

As a Bulldog Basketball player, Senior Stephanie Pfeifer was one of the students' coaches this year. Pfeifer was also one of the juniors who started the Student vs. Staff concept last year as a way to raise money for prom.

"I don't know what happened, we expected to win this year," Pfeifer said. "We're not as organized as the staff. We had the talent, but we only had two practices and some players didn't really know the game."

Pfeifer said she thinks the staff members have a bit of an advantage because the same team played together last year.

Henry Vecchioni, Brighton High School 10th Grade Level Principal and staff coach disagreed.

"I'm old enough to be their grandfather and they're fast," he laughed.

Vecchioni, who also coached the staff team last year, joked that it was time for him to retire while he was still undefeated.

"The game brings out the students," Vecchioni said. "They can beat me up for all I care. It unites a lot of kids."

Brighton High School 9th and 11th Grade Level Principal Jack Yates agreed.

"The kids love it," he said. "They love having us do real life stuff with them and just having fun."
