Cunningham Lake Resident Asks for No Vote from Voters at the Polls

Paul Wholihan, a resident of Cunningham Lake Road, is asking Brighton voters for a no vote today for the Genoa Township road millage proposal.

A resident of Cunningham Lake Road in Genoa Township for more than 38 years, Paul Wholihan has plans for the rest of election day to be present at one local polling location, hoping to convey his message to vote no on the Road Millage ballot to voters.

Today, Brighton voters in Genoa Township will be voting yes or no to approve a 15 year, 1.5 mill increase to fund a number of road improvement projects throughout the Township.

Calling the proposal "an ill-conceived message from the Township," Wholihan said that the generic question presented to voters by the Township didn't present enough information regarding specifics of the potential project.

"And they didn't check with us and our road, we don't want paved," he said. "It's a very neighborhood, rural road and I moved out here 38 years ago for a rural road. I've been on a dirt road and I want to keep it that way."

Wholian said that so far today he has been given a lot of support from voters heading into the polls and is hopeful that means the day will end with the road millage ending in a no.

"The people I have talked to, they don't want it," he said.

An election official at the Church of Nazarene location in Brighton said that voter turn out has been "steady and good" so far.

A township map, available from the Genoa Township website, indicates which roads, including Cunningham Lake Rd., where improvements would take place and the proposed Road Improvement Master Plan includes project descriptions and cost estimates for the proposed work.

If the proposal is approved, a home with a market value of $200,000 and a State Equalized Value (SEV) of $100,000 would pay $150 per year.
