Weekend Countdown: 5 New Year's Weekend Options

Here's a look at what's happening around the Brighton area this weekend.

1.

Where: , 12950 Grand River, Brighton

When: 11 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 1

Cost: The event is free, but admission to the park requires the "recreation passport"; if you don't have one, the cost is $10. It's good for one year and is available at any state park.

Why go: This casual, easy, fun hour of hiking is everyone; you just have to want to get out and enjoy some fresh air. Stick around after the walk for a bonfire and snacks. Bring a roasting stick, family or friends, a water bottle, your camera and an outdoor or nature story to share around the fire. Two $50 Running Fit gift cards will be randomly distributed to lucky winners.

Where: , 6995 Grand River, Brighton

When: daytime party's from 1-7 p.m. for the younger crowd; "late skate" takes place from 8 p.m.-2 p.m. (all ages welcome)

Cost: It's $7 admission plus $2 for regular skate rental or $4 for in-line skate rental during the ; the $15 fee includes regular skate rental, but inline skates are $2 more. (You may use your own skates as long as they won't scratch the floor; check at the desk.)

Why go: Both events include a balloon drop of prizes and favors; at the , pizza, pop and games are rolled into the price.

Where: , 201 W. Main St. in Brighton

When: 9 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 31-1 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 1

Cost: $75 per person/$140 per couple available only in advance; call 810-220-8900.

Why go: This , your choice of draft beer, selected martinis or wine, a large dessert table, party favors, a yummy midnight snack, live entertainment, giveaways for best-dressed party-goers in a room only open to those who bought tickets.

Where: , 1840 S. Old US Highway 23, Brighton

When: 9 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 31-2 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 1

Cost: $10 (reservations highly recommended so you get a seat; call 810-227-7230)

Why go: It's a nice party and a steal for what you get: the price includes music by a DJ, a champagne toast, favors and a pizza slice at midnight.

5.

Where: Brighton Bowl, 9871 E Grand River Ave. in Brighton

When: 9 a.m.-midnight on New Year's Day, Sunday, Jan. 1

Cost: All bowling is $2.50 a game before 5 p.m.; it's $3.50 after 5 p.m. Hourly lane rental is $15 per hour before 5 p.m. and $20 per hour after 5 p.m. Rent shoes for $2.75 per pair.
