Brighton Library Offers Comic, Manga and Graphic Novel Drawing Workshops

Join acclaimed Michigan artist Jerzy Drozd for the "Hey, Comics!" workshop series at the library.

Are drawing comics, graphic novels or manga your interest or passion? Then join acclaimed Michigan artist Jerzy Drozd for the free three-part workshop series "Hey, Comics!" from 2:30-4 p.m. beginning this Saturday and continuing Nov. 12 and Dec. 3 at the .

Sponsored by the library’s teen department, this workshop is for individuals 10 to 18 years old; no drawing experience is necessary.  Attendees will learn how to make their own comics, graphic novels and manga, comics based on a Japanese style of drawing.

Drozd will explore character design, world-building, knitting ideas into a story and how to express all of this information visually into your own comics. All materials will be supplied.

Drozd began his comics illustration career at 19, self-publishing his own comic books. His main passion has always been comics, and he enjoys sharing his enthusiasm with others. The artist, author and teacher has led workshops at schools and universities. He has worked with ArtServe Michigan on its Literacy Arts Comic Book Project and led professional development workshops for teachers at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. In June 2009, he began serving as the programming director for the annual Kids Read Comics celebration.

“Comics, graphic novels and manga enjoy more widespread popularity amongst students than ever," Drozd said. "Is it a fad, or is there something more profound in the way comics speak to young people?

“When reading comics, a reader infers what happens between the panels to construct the overall story, as well as predicts the outcome of a story based on the author’s choice," he said. "Exploring comics affords students the opportunity to express sophisticated ideas through images while improv(ing) reading fluency and comprehension.”
