Register for Summer Reading

Calling all world travelers! Children will explore places from Morocco to China through stories, crafts, music, dance and other activities.  Parents and caregivers may pre-register their children ages 2-11 for One World, Many Stories, beginning Sunday, June 5 at the Brighton District Library’s Springfest family celebration.

For every seven days of reading, children will receive a gently-used book and a prize. The youth Summer Reading Program concludes July 30.

Readers of all ages will travel the globe this summer as the library presents its eight-week Summer Reading Program, beginning Monday, June 6. It is free and open to anyone from preschool through adult, with programs, prize drawings, story hours and more.

“Of all the summer activities children participate in, time spent actually reading is the best predictor of reading achievement – the more students read, the better readers they become” said Carla Sharp, Head of Youth Services at the Brighton District Library.  “Children tend to read more when they are allowed to choose their own reading material.  Children who read during the summer move ahead with their skills; those who do not may lag behind in the fall,” notes Sharp.

The teen Summer Reading Program: You Are Here, for ages 11 and up, will offer programs from Japanese Kanzashi flower making to Fitness Fridays featuring martial arts, Zumba, Polynesian dancing and more. For every two weeks of reading, teens will be awarded a gently-used book and can enter their name into a drawing for prizes. The teen program runs through July 29.

The adult Summer Reading Program: Novel Destinations, highlights programs from around the world and back home again. Try tasting cuisine from Macedonia, hear baby boomer ballads or meet Loreen Niewenhuis who will discuss her newly-published book, A 1,000 Mile Walk on the Beach: One Woman’s Trek of the Perimeter of Lake Michigan. The adult program concludes July 29.

The Summer Reading Program is generously sponsored by the Friends of the Brighton District Library, a non-profit organization that supports the Library throughout the year through used book sales and memberships.
