Sports Spotlight: Brighton Track and Field

Boys and girls look for strong dual meet season.

• PLAYERS TO WATCH AND WHY: On the girls team, Amanda Curtis, the senior captain and runner helped clinch the teams opening win over Hartland last week with a second place finish in the 200 meter dash. Elizabeth Kingshot placed in three events in the same dual, the 1,600 meter relay, 3,200 and 800 meter runs. On the boys team, sophomores Zach Mayfield and Paul Kosaian already have shined with thirds at the recent Saginaw Valley State University invitationals in the 800 meter run and the 3,200 meter run respectively.

RECORDS: Girls are 1-0 after defeating Hartland last week. The boys team is 0-1 after a loss to the Eagles. Girls finished second in the Kensington Lakes Activities Association West Division last season.

• BOYS COACH: Oatha Hill in his fifth year at Brighton.

• BOYS COACH QUOTE: "Our kids we sluggish coming off spring break. Those 10 days off hurt us and it showed in our opener. Our distance runners did great but our sprinters and field teams struggled. Our kids know that there performance wasn’t that well. They know they can run better, basically we just need to go back to the drawing board and keep running and conditioning. I think we could salvage this meet and put it behind us and win the rest of our dual meets.”

• GIRLS COACH:  Jera Gee, who graduated from Brighton High School. She's in her first year as girls head coach and says she owes all her success to her former coaches at the school. She was co-coach last season.

• GIRLS COACH QUOTE: “I was pretty nervous against Hartland. They surprised us in a lot of areas. … The girls are running strong right now. I want to win them all. We’ve got four more league meets, Grand Blanc will give us a run for our money. This league has no weak links, it’s going to be a chess match, but I got a lot of help. …We’re a good team and we’re working well together.”

• PLAYER QUOTE: “We want to win every event. Our goal is to finish undefeated,” Curtis said.
