A sled race and chili cook-off, bowling for dollars and horse-drawn hayrides are just some of the family fun around town this week.

Here are Brighton Patch's best bets for children and families coming up in town:

SLED RACE & CHILI COOK-OFF

Where/when: Mt. Brighton, 6-8 p.m. Thursday.

Why go: Ever wonder what it would be like to sled down the ski hill at Mt. Brighton? Here's your chance to find out. Grab a sled (with brakes, please) and hit the slopes for the third annual , presented by Southeast Livingston Country Recreation Authority. Then, warm up with four-alarm samples (and vote for your favorite) as local restaurants and residents compete in the second annual . Sled race and chili winners announced at 8 p.m. All ages welcome.  

Pricing: Sled race, $15 per child; chili tasting, $7 for adults, $3 for children 12 and younger.

Where/when: , 6 p.m. Friday.

Why go: Support the Brighton High School Dance Company as it stages its first annual production, "Detroit Rock City." The evening includes performances by , Theresa's Academy of Dance, Gayle's Dancephase and members of the Brighton High School choir.

Pricing: $5 students, $7 adults and free for children 5 and younger.


Where/when: Kensington Metropark Farm Center, noon-4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Why go: Take a horse-drawn hayride over the fields and through the woods, blanketed with freshly-fallen snow, as Kensington hosts the last weekend of this winter-long tradition.

Pricing: $3 children, $5 adults.

BOWLING FOR DOLLARS

Where/when: , 9-11 a.m. Saturdays and Sundays.

Why go: Saturday and Sunday "Dollar Days" are perfect for young bowlers. Bumpers raise automatically, making it easy to avoid the gutters. Bowling balls are available in a range of colors, starting at 6 pounds. Best of all, the price is right!

Pricing: $1 per game (limit 3). Shoe rental, $2.75 per pair.
